Free tool, no sign-up

Free XML Sitemap Generator

Crawl your website and get a clean sitemap.xml in minutes: only live, indexable pages, canonical URLs, and last-modified dates when your server provides them.

Free and no sign-up. Crawls up to 500 pages per run.

How to use the XML sitemap generator

Three steps, and results in a few minutes.

Step 1

Enter your homepage

The crawler starts there and follows the links on your pages, the same way a search engine discovers them.

Step 2

Pick your options

Respect robots.txt, skip noindex pages, use canonical URLs and add last-modified dates. All are on by default.

Step 3

Download and submit

Download sitemap.xml, upload it to your site root and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

A sitemap built from a real crawl

Only the pages you want indexed, with the reasons for anything left out.

Real crawl

Follows the links on your pages, so the sitemap matches what search engines can actually reach.

Respects robots.txt

Pages you block for crawlers stay out of the sitemap.

Skips noindex and errors

Pages marked noindex, pages that redirect and pages that return errors are left out.

Canonical URLs

When a page names a different canonical URL, the sitemap lists the canonical one.

Last-modified dates

Adds lastmod when your server sends a Last-Modified header, and leaves it out when it does not.

What was left out

A list of every excluded page and the reason, so you can spot pages that should be indexed.

What is an XML sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a file that lists the pages on your site you want search engines to find. It sits at an address such as example.com/sitemap.xml and helps Google and Bing discover new and updated pages faster, especially pages that few other pages link to.

Do you need a sitemap?

Search engines can find most pages on a small, well-linked site without one. A sitemap helps most when your site is large, when it is new and has few links from other sites, when pages are hard to reach through your menus, or when you publish often and want new pages found quickly. It never hurts to have one.

What to include, and what to leave out

  • Include pages that load with a 200 status and that you want to appear in search results.
  • Leave out pages marked noindex, URLs that redirect, error pages, duplicate URLs that point to a different canonical, and pages blocked in robots.txt.

Listing a page in your sitemap does not guarantee it will be indexed. It tells search engines the page exists and that you consider it important.

Priority and change frequency

Google ignores the priority and changefreq values in sitemaps, so this generator leaves them out. It does use lastmod when the date is accurate, which is why the generator only adds dates your server actually reports.

Sitemap limits

One sitemap file can hold up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites split their URLs across several sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index file.

How to submit your sitemap

  1. Upload sitemap.xml to the root folder of your site, so it opens at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.
  2. Add a line to your robots.txt file: Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
  3. Submit it in Google Search Console (Sitemaps report) and in Bing Webmaster Tools.

WordPress sites with an SEO plugin and platforms such as Shopify create a sitemap automatically. Use this generator for static and custom-built sites, or to check what a crawler can really reach on yours.

XML Sitemap Generator FAQ

Straight answers to the questions we hear most.

Is this XML sitemap generator free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up and crawls up to 500 pages per run.

How does the generator find my pages?

It starts at the address you enter and follows the links on your pages, within the same domain. Pages that no page links to will not be found, which is also a sign search engines may miss them.

Why are some of my pages missing?

Open "Pages left out and why" under the results. Pages are left out when they are marked noindex, redirect, return an error, point to a different canonical URL or are blocked in robots.txt.

Does it add priority and changefreq?

No. Google ignores both values, so they only add noise. The generator adds lastmod when your server sends a real last-modified date.

Will it find pages loaded by JavaScript?

The crawler reads the links in the HTML your server sends. Links that only appear after JavaScript runs in the browser may be missed.

Where do I put the sitemap?

Upload it to the root of your site so it opens at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, add it to robots.txt, and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
